Tips for Traveling with Confidence This Holiday Season

November 24, 2025

Are you traveling this holiday season? It's gotten more common than ever. Each year seems to break the last record, and this year’s shaping up to be no different. AAA says more than 81.8 million Americans are expected to travel between November 25 and December 1, 2025 for the Thanksgiving holiday. That’s a lot of people heading out to see loved ones, take a vacation, or just soak up festive cheer.

Whether you’re packing up the car for a family road trip or braving the airports, a little planning can make a real difference. Here are a few friendly reminders to help your holiday travels go as smooth as possible:

  • Double-check special arrangements early

    • If you need any special accommodations like mobility assistance, specific meals, or other support arrangements, try to confirm those ahead of time. A quick call or email to your travel provider now can save you a lot of hassle later.
  •  Pack smart (and light!)

    • Despite my tendency to bring no fewer than five pairs of shoes on any trip, I try to remind myself... you don’t need to bring your whole closet. Packing light means less to haul. If you’ve got gifts or bulky items, consider shipping them ahead to your destination. Your back will thank you.
  • Dress for comfort and flexibility

    • Layers are your best friend. Check the weather where you’re headed, and pack outfits you can adjust easily, especially if you’ll be moving between chilly planes, warm terminals and varied temps at your destination.
  • Keep a mini health kit handy

    • Toss a few basics in your bag: snacks, an empty water bottle, pain relievers and a few extra days of your prescription meds (just in case your travels or bags get delayed). It’s one of those things you hope you don’t need, but are so glad to have when you do.
  • Use tech to your advantage

    • Your phone is your best travel buddy. From navigation and translation apps to mobile boarding passes and even currency converters, technology makes travel a lot easier. Just don’t forget your charger, or better yet, bring a portable one with you.
  • Make security lines a breeze

    • If you travel often, it might be worth signing up for TSA PreCheck (for domestic flights) or Global Entry (for international). You’ll spend less time waiting and more time relaxing. Plus, both last for five years once you’re approved. It's nice to keep your shoes on through airport security.
  • Keep your belongings safe

    • Try to leave expensive jewelry and extra credit cards at home. Make digital copies of your passport, ID, and insurance cards just in case. And keep your most important items in your carry-on.
  • And most importantly… pack your patience

    • Even with the best planning, things can go sideways with a shortage of TSA personnel, weather delays, traffic jams, or long lines. Bring something to help you pass the time: a good book, a podcast/audiobook, or a game on your phone.
    • Traveling during the holidays can be hectic, but it’s also one of the most heartwarming times of the year. With a bit of preparation (and a good dose of patience), you can focus on what really matters: connecting with the people and places that mean the most to you.
    • Pack your sense of humor. Remember, sometimes the best travel memories come from the unexpected moments.

Safe travels and happy holidays!
