Self-Care & Financial Wellness: A Perfect Pairing

Self-Care & Financial Wellness: A Perfect Pairing

July 24, 2025

July 24th is International Self-Care Day, a global observance created by the International Self-Care Foundation (ISF) in 2011. The date—7/24—symbolizes that the benefits of self-care are experienced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week 1. While self-care often brings to mind images of rest, hydration, and mindfulness, there’s another essential dimension that deserves attention: financial self-care.

As a financial advisor, I’ve seen how money stress can erode well-being. Self-care isn’t complete without financial wellness.

What Is Financial Self-Care?

Financial self-care means taking proactive steps to manage your money in a way that supports your overall health and happiness. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about being intentional. Here are a few ways to practice it:

Check In With Your Finances

Just like you’d schedule a check-up or therapy session, set aside time to review your budget, savings, and goals. Awareness is the first step toward empowerment 2. If you are married or have shared financials with a partner or significant other, discuss your situation together. Set a time at regular intervals - maybe once a month - and have coffee and pastries while you talk about pertinent financial matters. Try to keep the conversation open, curious and transparent.

Set Boundaries Around Spending

Self-care sometimes means saying “no” to impulse buys, financial obligations that stretch you too thin, or lifestyle choices that don’t align with your values. Pause before making large purchases and give yourself time to move from the impulse to a more rational decision.

Keep an Emergency Fund

Knowing you have a financial cushion can reduce anxiety and help you sleep better at night. It’s one of the most powerful forms of self-care you can give yourself 2. Depending on where you are in life, you'll want to have a bare minimum of three to six months of living expenses on hand for life's unexpected events.

Invest in Your Future

Whether it’s contributing to a retirement account or working with a financial advisor, investing in your future is a long-term act of self-love. Attend webinars, ask questions and take an active role in preparing for your future. Your future, more vulnerable self, will thank you for the steps you take today.

Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection

Financial wellness is a journey. Celebrate the small wins like paying off a credit card or sticking to your budget.

Self-Care is Personal... So is Financial Planning

Everyone’s version of self-care looks different, and the same goes for financial planning. What brings peace of mind to one person might not work for another. That’s why personalized financial advice is so important. If you’re ready to make financial self-care a priority, I’m here to help you create a plan that supports your goals, values, and lifestyle.
